Considered one of the greatest African films of all time, Djibril Diop Mambéty mixes the surreal and the naturalistic to comment on a post-colonial Senegal in the early 1970s with this magical drama-fantasy. Fed up with Dakar, two lovers Anta and Mory, long to escape to the glamour and comforts they imagine France has to offer, but their plan is waylaid by practical and mystical obstacles. Touki bouki vascillates between the manic and the meditative with an avant-garde sensibility characterized by vivid imagery, dark humor, unconventional editing, and jagged soundscapes, demonstrating Mambéty’s commitment to telling African stories in new ways.
