The second entry in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s widely acclaimed Three Colors trilogy, in which each film focuses on a different aspect of the French motto of “liberty, equality, fraternity.” White depicts a perverse version of “equality” in the form of embittered spouses seeking to ruin each other. Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish hairdresser living in Paris, is heartbroken when his French wife Dominique (Julie Delpy) requests a divorce, leaves him penniless, and frames him for arson. After fleeing to his native Poland, Karol enacts an elaborate scheme to take revenge on her. But will this make them equals again or merely ruin both of their lives?
