Master animator Hayao Miyazaki returns once again to his obsession with flying and aviation with this gorgeously rendered historical epic loosely based on the life of Japanese engineer Jiro Horikoshi. Jiro dreams all his life of the power of flight, but when his poor eyesight prevents him from becoming a pilot, he channels his passion into designing beautiful airplanes. When World War II breaks out, he gets his chance to make history with his development of the Mitsubishi “Zero” fighter plane, but he is plagued by doubts that he’s doing the right thing. In this film, originally planned as his swan song, Miyazaki uses Jiro’s predicament to consider the heavy cost of an artist dedicating their entire life to their work.
