Somewhere underneath New York City’s streets, a gang of armed professionals have hijacked a subway train and are threatening to kill one hostage per minute unless their demands are met. The only man who can stop them — Walter Matthau!
There are so many things we love about this movie: its combination of humor and grit, its gorgeous widescreen cinematography, David Shire’s amazing score, Robert Shaw’s cool, calculating performance as criminal mastermind Mr. Blue, its murderers row of ’70s character actors (Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, Lee Wallace, Tony Roberts, Kenneth McMillan, Jerry Stiller and Doris Roberts, to name a few), its continuing influence on movies, music and more, but most of all we love Matthau, whose disheveled charm cannot be beat.
