One of the most hauntingly superb dark dreams of cinema, Victor Erice’s The Spirit of the Beehive is a breathtaking vision of childhood’s ghosts. With unbelievable cinematography that manages to achieve the effect of a Rennaissance painting, a remarkable performance by its young star, and a pervasive tone of beautiful dread, this masterpiece of Spanish cinema is one of those films that will linger in your psyche forever. In 1940, directly after the Spanish Civil War, a young girl living on the Castilian plain attends a screening of the Boris Karloff classic Frankenstein. Haunted by the monster and taunted by her sister who insists that not only is the monster not dead, it exists as a spirit inhabiting a nearby barn. Obsessed with the monster and overwhelmed by fear and fascination, she begins to deteriorate mentally and physically, losing herself to a dark fantasy world. An ethereal essential and a rarely screened gem, you won’t want to miss your chance to see this stunning film on the big screen.
