This intelligent, sharply observed coming-of-age movie reimagines the classic story of Cyrano de Bergerac as a modern-day teen romance and celebration of queer identity. Ellie (Leah Lewis) is a gifted high-school student who has a lucrative side hustle ghostwriting her classmates’ term papers. Her friend Paul (Daniel Diemer) has a crush on the popular and beautiful Aster (Alexxis Lemire), and asks Ellie to put her writing skills to work crafting love notes that will help him seduce her. Ellie agrees, but their deception gets more complicated when Ellie reveals she’s in love with Aster herself. Alice Wu wrote and directed this charming indie, her follow-up to the groundbreaking 2004 lesbian love story Saving Face.
