Director Wong Kar-wai delivers a ravishing biopic of real-life martial artist Ip Man, which expertly fuses an action epic full of larger-than-life fight scenes with a decades-spanning tale of wistful longing and unrequited romance. Ip Man (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) is first introduced in 1936 as he tries to prove his worth to a martial-arts master, in the process gaining the attention of the master’s equally skilled daughter Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi). As years pass, the two are torn apart by the outbreak of World War II, as Ip Man tries to escape the bloodshed and protect his family, while Gong Er swears vengeance against the traitorous pupil who killed her father. The winner of 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, The Grandmaster is notable for the fact that its actors spent years training in martial arts in order to make the fight sequences as stunning and believable as possible.
We will be screening the American cut.
