I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am a man! That howl of pain comes from John Merrick (John Hurt), whose facial deformities have led to him being called “the Elephant Man” and exhibited in a freak show in 19th century London. Merrick’s lonely existence is changed forever when he meets Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), who shows him compassion for the first time in his life, and he soon begins the difficult process of interacting with society and developing his artistic pursuits. David Lynch directed this moving biopic based on the life of Joseph Merrick, which was nominated for eight Oscars and actually inspired the creation of the Academy Award for Best Makeup. It was also — believe it or not — executive produced by an uncredited Mel Brooks, who chose Lynch to direct after being mesmerized by a screening of Eraserhead.

Vidiots remembers one of the most groundbreaking and visionary artists of all time, the hugely inspired, inspirational, and influential maestro David Lynch. A man that virtually created the Midnight Movie, changed the face of cinema and television forever, and brought art films to the mainstream, Lynch was a powerful force of creativity and magic, and his passing is a loss so immense it reverberates in every part of our collective subconscious that he touched with his unending gifts.
