One of the first American movies to directly depict the chaos and violence of the Vietnam War, The Deer Hunter is a triumph of visionary New Hollywood filmmaking from director Michael Cimino. Mike (Robert De Niro), Steven (John Savage), and Nick (Christopher Walken) are three small-town steelworkers whose idyllic view of life — symbolized by the almost hourlong wedding sequence that opens the movie — is shattered forever when the three are shipped off to fight in Vietnam. The trio endure unimaginable horrors in a Vietnamese POW camp, but even their escape is just the beginning of a long odyssey that concludes with Mike searching for a lost friend during the fall of Saigon. Winner of five Oscars including Best Picture, the movie is also notable for featuring John Cazale’s final performance before his death, and for earning Meryl Streep her first Academy Award nomination.
