The Daytrippers, directed by late-aughts comedy mainstay Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland), follows one crazy day in the life of the dysfunctional Malone family as they embark on a frenzied odyssey through New York City. When eldest daughter Eliza (Hope Davis) finds a love letter addressed to her husband (Stanley Tucci), the whole family—including Eliza’s younger sister Jo (an effortlessly cool Parker Posey in the most dazzling pair of red leg warmers), mother Rita (comedy legend Anne Meara), father Jim (Pat McNamara), and Jo’s fiancé Carl (a baby-faced Liev Schreiber)—squeezes into a station wagon trekking from Long Island to the city in search of answers. The group stumbles and bickers through encounters with distinctly New York oddballs, artists, and elitists but no one is prepared for when their sleuthing leads to a devastating revelation. Anchored by standout performances from Posey, Davis, and Meara, Greg Mottola’s family road-trip from hell is a hilarious, clever, and surprisingly poignant indie gem.
