Bring your hankies for William Wyler’s provocative and powerful film adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s heartbreaking story of homophobia and slander, starring icons Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. Longtime friends Martha (Shirley MacLaine) and Karen (Audrey Hepburn) run a boarding school for girls. When an unruly child, Mary, is punished for lying, she concocts a story that Karen and Martha are having a lesbian relationship. As homophobic hysteria hits, parents begin to pull their kids from the school and the two embark to clear their names from the rumors. Nominated for five Academy Awards, this classic was pushing the envelope at a buttoned up time in American history and paved the way for more queer cinema to hit the theaters as the 60s and morality loosened over the next decade.
