Jim Carrey began to explore the dark side of his manic persona in this black comedy, a box-office disappointment at the time that has since grown into a cult classic. Carrey plays Chip, an overbearing cable-TV installer whose desperate loneliness causes him to latch onto anyone who shows him the slightest interest. That’s bad news for Steven (Matthew Broderick), a mild-mannered everyman who asks him for an illegal cable hookup, and soon Chip is invading every aspect of Steven’s life and demanding his friendship — or else. Directed by Ben Stiller, The Cable Guy is a caustic, bitterly funny look at alienation and our collective obsession with television.
