The first found footage horror phenomenon of the digital age, The Blair Witch Project was the original meme, using a provocative marketing campaign that led susceptible moviegoers to believe what they were seeing was real after months of teasers and a webpage that built on the mythology. In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found. Viscerally terrifying and visually unnerving, this low-budget high-concept independent horror not only changed the face of the genre for a generation, it paved the way for the viral marketing campaign!
