Maybe the very best of the ‘90s “classic-literature-to-movie-adaptation” boom (remember when we were getting a new version of Shakespeare or Jane Austen every other month? Good times!). Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet star as sisters who are left destitute when their father dies, and because this is Regency England, you know what that means: time to find some wealthy bachelors eager for marriage! Break out your fainting couch for such swoon-worthy suitors as Greg Wise, Alan Rickman, and Hugh Grant at maximum charming foppishness. It all amounts to a very dashing romance that will sweep you off your feet, thanks to Ang Lee’s magnificent direction and an Oscar-winning script by the multitalented Emma Thompson.
