It’s the time of year to fall back in love with P.T. Anderson’s sweetest and simplest film – an understated quirky indie romance with one of Adam Sandler’s best and most subdued performances. Soft-spoken and neurotic business-owner Barry Egan sells plungers for a living and spends his time on pudding cons. His simple life transforms suddenly when he meets the woman of his dreams and runs into coercion from con man Dean Trumbell (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Offbeat and unconventional (especially for PTA-fare), it’s the kind of romance that’s satisfying for everyone – skeptics included – and proof of how good a film can be with sparse but perfect elements.
