Saxophonist Ornette Coleman broke barriers as one of the pioneers of the music genre known as “free jazz,” and director Shirley Clarke honors his remarkable career by giving him a documentary as innovative and wildly unorthodox as his music. This avant-garde profile of Coleman doesn’t present a straightforward account of his life — instead, it jumps around rapidly from musical numbers to reenactments of his upbringing to interviews with luminaries like William S. Burroughs. It all builds to a collaboration between Coleman and the Forth Worth Symphony, with the jazzman leading them through a performance of his heady, hypnotic piece “Skies of America.”
