One of only three movies to win the so-called “Big Five” Oscars — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress — One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest remains one of the greatest films of the 1970s and a perfect encapsulation of that decade’s raw, countercultural anger against an unjust system. The story centers on R.P. McMurphy, a convicted criminal who pleads insanity in order to get sent to a mental institution, and whose roguish charm could only be played by Jack Nicholson. McMurphy inspires the other inmates to stand up for themselves and learn to live life, a choice that sets him on a collision course with the indomitable Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher).
