Bill Paxton squares off against Billy Bob Thornton (who also co-wrote the screenplay) in Carl Franklin’s breakout sleeper hit One False Move. After a brutal Los Angeles crime spree, three criminals head off to Houston to unload a carload of cocaine. When they end up in a small Arkansas town, the local sheriff is all too excited to take on some real police work and bring the murderous fugitives to justice. With complex characters, dynamite performances, and gripping action, this film was so beloved by critics – including as Gene Siskel’s favorite film of the year – its distribution company upgraded it from a straight-to-video release to a theatrical one, and it still remains one of the best thrillers of the 1990s.
