I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it. You might know that iconic quote, and you might be aware that Marlon Brando’s performance in this movie was a game-changer in film history, helping to popularize the more naturalistic style known as Method acting. But don’t let that overshadow the film itself, a masterpiece that earned eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and remains just as powerful 70 years later. Brando plays Terry Malloy, a longshoreman and former boxer who grows to resent the mobsters who control his local union. And in her film debut, Eva Marie Saint is luminous as Terry’s love interest, who acts as his conscience and inspires him to take a stand and fight back – no matter what the cost.
