Spend the night in Memphis with one of the coolest movies ever made, Jim Jarmusch’s aloof masterpiece, Mystery Train. A triptych of tales of the varied visitors to the city that birthed the music of a nation including Stax Records, Sun Studio, Graceland, Carl Perkins, and, of course, the King, who appears as a shimmering ghost in memory and spirit. From the painfully cool rock n’ roll obsessed Japanese tourists, to an Italian women in mourning, to the smarmy British immigrant, all are met at a historic, and nearly decrepit hotel by the desk clerk played by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. With a score by John Lurie, magnificent cinematography by the legendary Robby Müller, and a healthy dose of pervasive nonchalance, Jarmusch masterfully paints a picture of a town filled with ghosts and legends.
