Fritz Lang’s gritty, disturbing thriller has lost none of its power to shock and unsettle even now, almost a century after its first release. Peter Lorre plays Hans Beckert, a serial killer targeting children whose crimes have turned Berlin into a madhouse of fear and paranoia. The police launch an extensive manhunt, the criminal underworld follows suit, and soon the entire city is eager to make Beckert pay. M holds a twisted mirror up to humanity and dares us to look at the darkness we’re capable of: both in a killer who can’t help himself, and an angry mob all too ready to give in to their worst impulses.
