Vidiots presents a special screening of La Bamba, the classic 1987 box office hit, with actor, director and author Lou Diamond Phillips, Ritchie’s sister Irma Norton, and iconic LA photographer Merrick Morton, who has just published a book of behind-the-scenes photography from the making of the film.
Directed by Luis Valdez, considered the father of Chicano cinema, La Bamba is the story of Ritchie Valens, the first Latino rock ’n’ roll idol, whose short but influential life changed the face of music history forever. In his breakthrough role, Lou Diamond Phillips captures the passion and drive of the 1950s teenager, who rises above his farmworker roots to achieve his dream. The film became a touchstone of the era in cinema. Propelled by a hit movie soundtrack featuring Los Lobos, Bo Diddley and Brian Setzer, it remains a multi-generational favorite today, combining music, young romance and the universality of the American dream.
Join us after the screening and conversation in the lobby for a book signing of Morton’s new publication La Bamba: A Visual History by Merrick Morton, published by Hat & Beard Press.
