This sensitive, heartrending drama is both one of the most popular films of the 1970s and arguably the definitive Hollywood movie about an era of skyrocketing divorce. Dustin Hoffman plays Ted Kramer, a workaholic ad man who’s shell-shocked when he comes home one day to find his wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) about to leave him and their seven-year-old son Billy (Justin Henry) in order to find herself. Ted slowly learns how to take care of household tasks and emotionally care for his son, but his world is turned upside down again when Joanna returns to claim custody of Billy, triggering a bitter court battle. Winner of five Oscars — including Best Picture, Best Actor for Hoffman, and Best Supporting Actress for Streep (the first wins for both performers) — Kramer vs. Kramer remains a deeply moving, achingly human look at divorce and its messy aftermath.
