Fall into a cinematic trance with Chantal Akerman’s meditative masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. Screen icon Delphine Seyrig plays the eponymous Jeanne, a middle-aged widow going through her daily routine in real-time. Scrubbing potatoes and turning tricks in equal measures of disinterest, the ordinary becomes both sublime and menacing as impending doom lingers on the horizon. At once a multi-faceted and nuanced character study and a mesmerizing examination of space, time, and ritual, Akerman’s film was recently named the “Greatest film of all time” by Sight and Sound magazine and demands to be seen on the big screen.
