Vidiots, The Cinegogue, and A Bunch of Savages are thrilled to present an ultra-rare screening of Lino Brocka’s masterful melodrama Insiang.

Jealousy and violence take center stage in this claustrophobic melo­drama, a tautly constructed character study set in the slums of Manila from Filipino master Lino Brocka. Brocka crafts an eviscerating portrait of an innocent daughter and her bitter mother as women scorned. Insiang leads a quiet life dominated by household duties, but after she is assaulted by her mother’s lover and abandoned by the young man who claims to care for her, she exacts vicious revenge. A savage commentary on the degradations of urban poverty, especially for women, Insiang was the first Filipino film ever to play at Cannes.

If anyone asks, we’re a collective of dreamers, filmmakers, writers, and creatives with a commitment to empowering the next generation of artists. Our name comes from a phrase used to describe the Filipinos in 1899 by then Gov. Theodore Roosevelt.

The Cinegogue is a community-driven organization dedicated to increasing interest in film. We make clothes, throw parties, host screenings, and produce films. Our goal: make movies cool again through concert-like experiences and fanfare. We’re a group of friends who wish to extend our love for cinema beyond the 2 hour runtimes in which these movies exist. Because even though a movie might end, cinema is forever.
