Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, and Sandra Dee light up the screen in this Douglas Sirk tearjerking melodrama of single mothers and racial identity. The second screen adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s incendiery novel, Douglas Sirk ratchets up the drama, the color, and the story of this powerful tale of women’s resilience from its predecessor with Claudette Colbert. Lora Meredith (suspected murderess Lana Turner), a white single mother who dreams of being on Broadway, takes in a black widow Annie (Juanita Moore) and her mixed race daughter (Susan Kohner) to live with her and her daughter (Sandra Dee). Together, the women deal with the maelstrom of life’s ups and downs including the toll of success and Annie’s daughter desperately trying to erase her racial identity and come off as white. With incredible female characters and actors, that gorgeous Sirkian Technicolor touch, and a story of race that was decades ahead of its time, this classic melodrama is ready to pull you in and give you all the feels!
