Director Masaki Kobayashi delivers a samurai movie like no other with this provocative drama, which dares to examine the dire consequences of blindly obeying authority. In 17th-century Japan, masterless samurai Tsugumo Hanshiro (Tatsuya Nakadai) asks the powerful Iyi clan if he can commit ritual suicide in the courtyard of their estate, but clan elder Saito (Rentaro Mikuni) suspects he’s just another beggar looking for money. When Saito forces him to go through with the ceremony, Tsugomo tells the clan the shocking story of how the heartlessness of the samurai code destroyed his life. Winner of the Special Jury Award at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, Harakiri is a timeless meditation on the difficulty of holding on to one’s humanity in the face of a cruel and unjust system.
