One of the darkest entries into one of America’s bleakest and funniest auteur Todd Solondz’s twisted body of work, Happiness is a subversive masterpiece of feel-bad filmmaking. A remarkable and controversial ensemble piece centering on a family of three adult sisters – the soccer mom, the successful poet, and the aimless dreamer – all with their own orbits of longing and depravity. Containing some of the most envelope-pushing subject matter committed to celluloid, this is not easy viewing, but Solondz’s deadpan dark humor keeps you laughing and cringing throughout, up to its absolutely unforgettable ending. Definitely disturbing, but masterfully acted and sardonically crafted, this is dark comedy at its darkest and funniest.
