Director: Elia Kazan Run Time: 115 min. Format: Digital Release Year: 1955
Starring: James Dean, Jo Van Fleet, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos
Screenwriter: Paul Osborn from the novel by John Steinbeck
Producer: Elia Kazan
Adapted from the acclaimed novel by John Steinbeck (and even more loosely adapted from the Biblical story of Cain and Abel), this searing period drama from director Elia Kazan explores the fissures in a dysfunctional family. In 1910s California, wayward son Cal (James Dean) struggles to prove his worth to his deeply religious father Adam (Raymond Massey) and live up to the example of his better-loved brother Aron (Richard Davalos). But Cal’s good intentions are complicated by a shocking secret about his supposedly deceased mother, their farm’s economic decline, and the looming shadow of World War I. Dean’s electrifying performance here is still hailed as one of the greatest in film history — this was the last movie of his released before his tragic death at 24, and it earned him a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
