Spanish provocateur Luis Buñuel once again explores the perversity and hypocrisy of human nature with this biting social satire set in the French countryside of the 1930s. Célestine (the magnificent Jeanne Moreau) arrives at a rural estate to work as a chambermaid, only to discover that the family employing her are a tangled mess of crippling neuroses, violent impulses, and offbeat sexual kinks. She tries her best to avoid getting caught up in their dysfunctional affairs, but when a local girl is murdered, she decides to use her seductive wiles to bring the killer to justice. Diary of a Chambermaid not only serves as a vicious satire of the idle rich — one of Buñuel’s favorite themes — but examines the creeping fascism that was about to engulf Europe.
