If it’s about sexy people in Hong Kong pining for lost love in stunning lighting, then it must be a movie by Wong Kar-Wai! Set in 1960, this ravishingly gorgeous drama is one of WKW’s earliest works, and marks his first collaboration with brilliant cinematographer Christopher Doyle. The film weaves a twisted web of erotic and romantic connections, which ensnare a womanizer (Leslie Cheung) searching for his birth mom, his lovesick ex-girlfriend (Maggie Cheung), a dancer (Carina Lau), and a cop (Andy Lau). It also features a last-minute cameo by Tony Leung Chiu-wai as a charismatic playboy (or is that redundant?). So forget your own relationship troubles and prepare to enter a world where heartache looks cool as hell.
