Careful Maggie, your claws are showing. If you love a Southern melodrama dripping with the scent of magnolia in the humid night, you’ll want to race to see this all time classic starring two of the 20th century greatest, and most beautiful stars – Liz Taylor and Paul Newman. After Brick Pollitt (Paul Newman) injures himself while drunkenly revisiting his high school sports-star days, he and his tempestuous wife, Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor), visit his family’s Mississippi plantation for the 65th birthday of his hot-tempered father, Big Daddy (Burl Ives). Cantankerous even with declining health, Big Daddy demands to know why Brick and Maggie haven’t yet given him a grandchild, unlike Brick’s brother Gooper (Jack Carson) and his fecund wife, Mae (Madeleine Sherwood). Nominated for 6 Oscars and countless other awards, this Southern Gothic classic is a master class in acting as well as the artistry of film.
