Featuring an in-person conversation with filmmaker Jamie Babbit!
Vidiots welcomes groundbreaking filmmaker Jamie Babbit for a screening of our all-time favorite Queer Camp Comedy – But I’m a Cheerleader. Megan (Natasha Lyonne) is an All-American suburban teen from a conservative family with a boyfriend and a coveted spot on the cheerleading team. When her parents notice “concerning” signs of lesbianism – like a penchant for Melissa Etheridge – they ship her off for a summer of coerced heteronormative behavior at True Directions – a queer conversion camp where she learns the opposite lesson and not only embraces her homosexuality, but ends up falling in love. With biting satire, a vibrant and campy aesthetic, and an incredible cast including RuPaul, Mink Stole, Clea DuVall, and Melanie Lynskey, this movie is as fun as it is subversive.
