Screenwriters: Jean-Luc Godard, from the novel Fool’s Gold by Dolores Hitchens

One of Jean-Luc Godard’s most charming crime capers, cinema doesn’t get much cooler than this laissez-faire dalliance with love, danger, friendship, and amateur criminality. Cinephile slackers Franz and Arthur spend their days mimicking the antiheroes of Hollywood noirs and Westerns while pursuing the lovely Odile (the iconic Anna Karina at her most adorably luminous). The misfit trio upends convention at every turn, be it through choreographed dances in cafés or frolicsome romps through the Louvre. Eventually, their romantic view of outlaws pushes them to plan their own heist, but their inexperience may send them out in a blaze of glory — which could be just what they want. With a soundtrack from Michel Legrand and an infectious nonchalance, this is fizzy French fun at its best!
