The first entry in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s widely acclaimed Three Colors trilogy, in which each film focuses on a different aspect of the French motto of “liberty, equality, fraternity.” Here, Juliette Binoche plays a woman who learns the true meaning of “liberty” when she is given the freedom to start over in the worst possible way: after she survives a car accident that claims the lives of her husband and daughter. Soon, the impossible task of learning to live again is further complicated by the dilemma of whether she’ll move on by airing her husband’s personal and professional secrets.
