With an introduction by Bernardo Rondeau

Rediscover with us a lost arthouse classic that offers an outsider’s view of Los Angeles, Smog by Franco Rossi.  A Roman attorney on a lengthy layover from Italy to Mexico finds himself wandering aimlessly through the City of Angels, eventually falling in with a group of fellow ex-patriates.  The first Italian film made in America – Franco Rossi’s Smog was nearly forgotten for 60 years after its initial 1962 release. Newly restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive to its full length, Smog offers a breathtaking time capsule of Los Angeles as it looked at the beginning of the 60s. Somewhere between a road movie and a city symphony, Smog offers a treasure trove for modernist architecture heads: the Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport, Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House, and Bernard Judge’s Triponent House all feature prominently.

Restoration funded by the Golden Globe Foundation. Restored by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and the UCLA Film and Television Archive in collaboration with Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. from the 35mm original picture negative, a 35mm composite fine grain master positive and a 35mm optical track negative. Laboratory services by L’Immagine Ritrovata Group, Warner Bros. Post Production Creative Services – Picture. Special thanks to Daphne Dentz, George Feltenstein, Craig Johnson.
