A breathtaking candle-lit vision of Bram Stoker’s eternal romance and a loving homage to F.W. Murnau’s silent classic, Werner Herzog creates a grim beauty that honors its source material but creates a tone and philosophy all its own. The most subdued of the collaborations between Herzog and generally unhinged maniac Klaus Kinski, this melancholic tone piece seeks to re-paint the undead count as a lovelorn immortal tormented by his existence as the bubonic plague spreads through town. Kinski is arresting in makeup inspired by Max Schrenk’s original vampiric look and Isabelle Adjani is luminous as his beloved Lucy. Poetic and moody, this Nosferatu is a masterpiece of bleak beauty.
