Thrilling, funny, and perenially relevant, Norman Jewison’s tense thriller continues to resonate nearly 60 years later. In The Heat Of The Night beat The Graduate, Bonnie And Clyde, Doctor Dolittle, and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (also starring Sydney Poitier) for Best Picture in 1967. It still scorches the screen today. Poitier plays Virgil Tibbs, a Philadelphia homicide detective who must work with a racist police chief (Rod Steiger) to solve a Mississippi murder mystery. Shot by Haskell Wexler, edited by Hal Ashby, scored by Quincy Jones, and directed by Norman Jewison, In The Heat Of The Night is a true masterclass. But the acting, including fantastic turns from Lee Grant and Warren Oates, is worth emphasizing: Steiger and Poitier put on a clinic. They call him Mister Tibbs, alright. Come see why.
