Surf’s up, Snake Plissken! That’s right, Escape From New York’s cycloptic badass with a cement mixer caught in his throat is back, and L.A.’s rules are really starting to annoy him. Escape From L.A. pits Plissken against the island of Los Angeles, which broke away from the mainland United States after the Big One. Like New York, it’s now a prison run by a theocratic president serving a lifetime term of office. Snake has to go to the heart of the city to recover a new superweapon that could knock out the world’s electronics. Disregarded at the time for its silly tone and sillier special effects, Escape From L.A. has since been reclaimed as a late masterpiece by legendary director John Carpenter. With John Carpenter’s skill, an all-star cast including Steve Buscemi and Bruce Campbell to add to Kurt Russell’s bad-assery, and stunning production design for Blade Runner’s Lawrence G. Paull, this is a dazzling banger made to be seen on a big screen in East LA!
