An audacious and gleeful shock to the system, Věra Chytilová’s Czech New Wave masterpiece is punk as f*&k, but also as sweet, goofy, and girly as the name would imply. A truly absurd and kaleidoscopic endeavor, this film is a raw and riotous middle finger to authoritarianism, the patriarchy, and especially to reason. Two young women embrace spitting in the face of convention and fall down a rabbit hole of gluttony, destruction, rebellion, and an unabashed pursuit of pleasure. With a visual style as anarchic as the subjects, this visual smorgasbord of varying film stocks, sporadic animation, and hallucinatory editing is essential big screen viewing.
