From Spike Lee comes a sweet and sentimental semi-autobiographical portrait of a family living in Bed-Stuy in 1970s Brooklyn. Cowritten by Lee’s sister Joie, the film focuses on nine-year-old tomboy Troy as she deals with her femininity, rowdy brothers, white-washed Virginia relatives, and the money troubles of her schoolteacher mother and her jazz-pianist father. This touching film is softer than your average Spike Lee joint and a nuanced and naturalistic slice of vintage domesticity.
