This final film by Japanese auteur Yasujiro Ozu is a masterpiece touching once again on his core themes: the relationships between parents and children, a society that’s rapidly changing in the wake of World War II, and the question of how best to weather life’s many casual disappointments. Here, the focus is on elderly widower Shūhei (Chishū Ryū), who begins to worry that his only daughter has missed her chance for happiness by acting as his caretaker instead of getting married. But will his attempts to find her a husband put his house in order, or only lead to more sorrow? With infinite wisdom and boundless patience, Ozu uses their plight to examine what it means to be human.
