Werner Herzog and his best fiend Klaus Kinski journey deep into the jungles of South America to tell a story of ambition, imperialism, and madness in this incredible historical epic. Not long after the destruction of the Inca Empire, a Spanish expedition led by the infamous Conquistador Lope de Aguirre leaves the mountains of Peru and travels down the Amazon River in search of the lost city of El Dorado. When difficulties arise and Aguirre begins to lose his grip on reality, Aguirreās men start to wonder whether their quest will bring them prosperity or certain death. Klaus Kinski’s deranged and unhinged performance is as mesmerizing as it is notorious, and coupled with the lush natural claustrophobia of the rainforest, a hypnotic score by Krautrock band Popol Vuh, and Herzog’s filmic mastery, Aguirre remains beyond legendary.
