Ethan and Joel Coen’s brilliant dark comedy A Serious Man is one of their most philosophical and personal films. In Midwestern 1967, Jewish physics professor Larry Gopnik’s wife is leaving him for his friend Sy Ableman, his son is smoking pot at his Bar Mitzvah, his daughter is stealing money, and his brother’s about to move in with him into a hotel. Larry seeks to find answers to his questionable new stage in life through a series of wise, but not always helpful Rabbis that seek to help him to accept the foibles of humanity and navigate this new chapter.
